چکیده
Iron in the early anoxic oceans of Archean age (4000-2500 million years ago) is believed to have been oxidized form banded iron formations (BIF). Previously, it has proposed that was either by free oxygen, H2O2, microbial oxidation, or photo-oxidation. However, these mechanisms are difficult reconcile with evidence for at time having largely devoid dissolved oxygen and oxidants, together rarity remains BIF restrictively slow rates Experiments reported here show ferrous readily oxidizes analogs seawater following precipitation hydroxide. Once precipitated, hydroxide undergoes decomposition elemental reacts water room temperature ferric release hydrogen gas. The may then be incorporated into green rust, a mixed ferrous-ferric phase ages minerals commonly found BIF. Our finding suggests oxidation contributed formation oxide-facies BIF, especially Algoma-type likely formed semi-restricted basins where saturation more easily achieved. Additionally, would Earth's as result escape space, thus providing new insights environmental biological conditions on Earth.

Phototrophic Fe(II) oxidation in an atmosphere of H2: implications for Archean banded iron formations.
The effect of hydrogen on the rate of phototrophic Fe(II) oxidation by two species of purple bacteria was measured at two different bicarbonate concentrations. Hydrogen slowed Fe(II) oxidation to varying degrees depending on the bicarbonate concentration, but even the slowest rate of Fe(II) oxidation remained on the same order of magnitude as that estimated to have been necessary to deposit the...
متن کاملIron isotope composition of some Archean and Proterozoic iron formations
Fe isotopes can provide new insight into redox-dependent biogeochemical processes. Precambrian iron formations (IF) are deserving targets for Fe isotope studies because they are composed predominantly of authigenic Fe phases and record a period of unprecedented iron deposition in Earth’s history. We present Fe isotope data for bulk samples from 24 Archean and Proterozoic IF and eight Phanerozoi...
متن کاملLigand-Enhanced Abiotic Iron Oxidation and the Effects of Chemical versus Biological Iron Cycling in Anoxic Environments
This study introduces a newly isolated, genetically tractable bacterium ( Pseudogulbenkiania sp. strain MAI-1) and explores the extent to which its nitrate-dependent iron-oxidation activity is directly biologically catalyzed. Specifically, we focused on the role of iron chelating ligands in promoting chemical oxidation of Fe(II) by nitrite under anoxic conditions. Strong organic ligands such as...
متن کاملEarly diagenetic quartz formation at a deep iron oxidation front in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific – a modern analogue for banded iron/chert formations?
The mechanisms of early diagenetic quartz formation under low-temperature conditions are still poorly understood. In this study we investigated lithified cherts consisting of microcrystalline quartz recovered near the base of a 420 m thick Miocene-Holocene sequence of nannofossil and diatom ooze at a drill site in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (Ocean Drilling Program Site 1226). Precipitation ...
